About Roheen
Roheen Qamar is a computer scientist working where artificial intelligence meets network security.
Her research began with a practical problem: spotting distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks early enough to stop them. It has since grown to cover blockchain, the Internet of Things, cloud computing, big data and conversational AI.
She holds a master's degree in information technology from Quaid-e-Awam University of Engineering, Science and Technology (QUEST), where her thesis used neural networks to detect and mitigate DDoS attacks. She has since published in national and international journals, contributed chapters to volumes from IGI Global, Routledge and Taylor & Francis, and reviewed for more than 120 journals.
Alongside research she has taught computing for over a decade, from school classrooms to university labs, and cares about preparing the next generation of people who will build AI.

Research projects
Comparing neural networks for DDoS detection
Three artificial neural networks were built and compared in MATLAB, each trained with gradient descent, to find which architecture separates attack traffic from normal traffic most reliably.
Recurrent neural networks for DDoS detection
Applies recurrent networks, which read traffic as a sequence over time, and trains them with gradient-based algorithms to flag attacks as they build up.
Recursive neural networks for DDoS detection
Tests recursive networks, which learn from the structure of the input, as a second route to detecting attacks with gradient training.
Predictive security for IoT environments
Uses gradient-trained models to anticipate threats and deploy security measures across Internet of Things networks before damage is done.
